Pottery wheel throwing for beginners
Our 2-hour throwing taster class is for those who are absolute beginners. A fantastic introduction to the potter’s wheel, you’ll learn to craft a range of objects under the watchful eye of a master potter in our beautiful countryside studio.
You will learn the very basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel, including weighing and preparing balls of clay, centring your clay, pulling, shaping, and working with tools. Over the course of the session, you’ll get to grips with the basic techniques of throwing bowls and cylinders and end up with something beautiful to be glazed, fired, and cherished.


What does a pottery taster session include?
Our introductory wheel throwing sessions take place at Stupots Studio in Rangeworthy, just outside Bristol. In these stunning countryside surroundings, you’ll learn the basics of throwing a pot on the wheel – and have a lot of fun.
Every session includes:
- All materials, aprons, glazes, and firings.
- As much clay as you’d like!
- Use of your own wheel for the duration of the session.
- Adults only.
- The glazing and firing of one of your finished pieces.
- A choice of glaze colours.
- A maximum of 10 people.
Please wear appropriate clothing as you will get clay on yourself.
Each person has their own dedicated potters wheel.
There will be a maximum of 10 people attending this class.
All classes will take place in the pottery at Stupots Studio.

With plenty of one-to-one guidance, beautiful surroundings, and relaxed studio environment, this is the perfect way to gain greater proficiency on the wheel. You’ll even have the option at the end of our 12-week course to extend your time with us.
